Default Pre-Order Settings Setup

Learn what each configuration option does, and gain useful advice on how to set up these options best for your store.

Updated over a week ago

To change the default settings for pre-orders, go to the 'Products' page in the app. Any changes you make here will apply to all pre-orders by default unless you make specific customizations at the Product level.

Here's how each option works, along with some helpful tips to assist you in configuring them effectively for your store.

Pre-Order Closed

Use this field to customize the default text displayed on your Add-to-Cart buttons when products are unavailable for pre-order.

The "Automatically set pre-orders to off" option can be a useful way to automatically determine which products customers are willing to pre-order during restocking periods.

Once a product has been restocked, pre-orders will not be reactivated unless done manually.

Customize Button Text

Use these fields to set the default button text and message for your pre-order button.

Keep in mind, if your pre-order button is a call to action like "Add to Cart" or "Buy Now," it's important to clarify to customers that they are purchasing a pre-order product.

Also, be sure to add specific dates for when a product is expected to restock, to help give customers an idea of how long they'll be waiting to receive their order.

Pre-Order Quantity Limit

Setting a pre-order quantity limit is great for selling limited-release products, and can also help prevent overstocking in case of returns or refunds.

Additionally, you can display the remaining pre-order quantity on your product pages, instilling a sense of urgency in customers who may be on the fence about making a purchase.

Scheduling Pre-Orders

By default, pre-orders will run continuously as stock runs out. However, depending on your use case, pre-orders can also be set to start and finish on specific dates.

Don't forget to feature these dates on your product pages and align your marketing efforts accordingly to instill a sense of urgency in potential customers.

Default Pre-order Discount

Offering discounts is a great way to motivate customers to pre-order a product by providing them an incentive to save, even if it means a slightly longer order fulfillment time.

Keep in mind this setting will automatically add the discount amount to all pre-order-enabled products. To add discounts individually, you can do so back on the Products page,

Pre-Order Terms & Conditions

Having clear pre-order terms is critical when you begin offering pre-orders.

With the app, you can display the terms beneath your pre-order button and enable opt-in before customers complete an order.

Transparent pre-order terms can prevent customer confusion or frustration, and we suggest adding a Pre-Orders specific FAQ section on your store's main Terms & Conditions page.

Try using our Pre-Orders FAQ questions template to help get you started.

Finally, outlining a pre-order guarantee can also help to set expectations and increase pre-order sales. Some examples of this might be:

  • Items will ship on the advertised date, else buyers are entitled to a refund or credit.

  • Pre-Orders will come with exclusive/bonus items.

  • Pre-Orders can be refunded at any time before the item is shipped.
